How do I apply for a passport for children under 18 years of age?

The procedure for issuing the first Italian passport or to renew the previous one, is the same.

For the issuance of passports to Italian minors, it is always necessary to book an appointment on Prenot@mi

The appointment for a minor must be made with the parent’s account: please specify in the notes that the appointment is for a minor child.

The appointment must be confirmed by the user directly on the portal ten days before the scheduled date and no later than four days before the scheduled date.

Please note that passport applications sent by mail will not be processed and will be mailed back to the sender. Passport applications can only be processed in person at the Consulate, provided that applicant has a scheduled appointment.

The presence of the minor at the appointment is mandatory only if the minor is 12 years of age or older.

Minors who have not yet turned 12 years of age do not need to be present at the Consulate if they have a previous Italian passport or a US/Other Country passport.

If the minor does not have a passport the minor must be present in person at the Consulate to be identified. The minor must be accompanied by both parents;

For passport issuance to a minor, it is necessary to:

  • Be an Italian citizen. If the minor was not born in Italy, the birth certificate must have been sent to the competent Italian municipality through the Consulate’s Vital records office (How to register a birth – Consolato Generale d’Italia a New York)
  • Be registered in the AIRE with updated residential address in this consular district, which consists of: State of New York, State of Connecticut, State of New Jersey (limited to the following Counties: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, Warren) and Bermuda Islands. On the day of the appointment the parents and the minor 12 years of age and over must appear in person with the following documentation:

  • application form for applicants under 18 years of age printed and duly filled out in its entirety (Domanda rilascio passaporto minore);
  • The consent of both parents is required. The parent who is unable to appear in person at the Consulate must fill out and sign the consent form attaching a copy of his or her passport (page with personal data and signature of the holder). If the absent parent is not an EU citizen, the signature on the consent form must be notarized by a Notary Public (ATTO DI ASSENSO);
  • 2 passport photos (recent, identical, standard passport size, white background, up close, neutral expression, no glasses). Only for applicants over 12 years of age photos may be taken directly at the Consulate;
  • previous Italian passport unless it is a first passport, or in the event of loss/theft. In that case, another valid identification document must be presented
  • Minors holding only Italian citizenship must present a copy of the US Alien Registration Card (green card) or entry visa; (for minors residing in Bermuda, copy of parents’ Bermuda Work Permit Card or Permanent Resident Certificate);
  • for minors holding other citizenships, copy of the passport issued by the state of which the other citizenship is held;
  • copy of parents’ passports; parents with Italian citizenship must submit copy of the Italian passport.
  • money order payable to Consulate General of Italy in New York. The cost of the passport for the current quarter is $124.50. For the updated cost of all consular services, see CONSULAR RATES. No credit/debit cards or personal checks are accepted. Money orders are issued by post offices, banks, some large pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens
  • a pre-paid self-addressed “Priority Mail” envelope with “tracking number” (to be purchased exclusively from US Post Office), for the shipment of the new passport. The Consulate cannot be held responsible for the non-arrival or delayed arrival of the passport due to postal services;
  • the passport may also be picked up at the Consulate by one of the parents or by a third party delegated in writing to pick it up. The date of the pick-up is agreed upon on the day of the appointment. If this option is chosen, the envelope is not required.
