Travel by children under 14 years of age traveling alone or with persons other than their parents

Italian minors under the age of 14, who travel with an Italian passport without their parents or those exercising parental authority, must have a certificate of accompaniment, which is issued by the Consulate.

Parents can arrive without an appointment on Fridays from 09.30 am to 10.30 am, having previously sent the following documents by email to newyork.passaporti@esteri.it:

  • authorization of accompaniment signed by both parents (form);
  • copy of the minor’s passport;
  • copy of the parents’ passports;
  • copy of the passport of the accompanying person(s);
  • airline ticket.

On the day the consular certificate is picked up, at least one parent must be present and the original documentation must be delivered.

If one of the parents is not an EU citizen, it is always necessary for him/her to come personally to the Consulate. If this is not possible, his or her signature on the authorization form must be notarized at a Notary Public.

If the non-EU parent is outside of this consular area, he or she must go to the nearest Italian Consular Office in the U.S. or abroad or, if in Italy, to the Questura.
