How do I apply for a passport?

The procedure for issuing the first Italian passport or to renew the previous one, is the same.

Passports cannot be renewed: application for new passport must be processed

For the issuance of passports, it is always necessary to book an appointment on Prenot@mi, which must be confirmed by the user directly on the portal ten days before the scheduled date and no later than four days before the scheduled date.

As a courtesy national over the age of 75 can also book the appointment by e-mail, writing to newyork.passaporti@esteri.it or calling +1 (646) 897-0653 on Wednesdays from 2 to 3 p.m.

Please note that passport applications sent by mail will not be processed and will be mailed back to the sender. Passports applications can only be processed in person at the Consulate, provided that applicant has a scheduled appointment.

For passport issuance, it is necessary to:

  • Be an Italian citizen
  • Be registered in the AIRE with updated residential address in this consular district, which consists of: State of New York, State of Connecticut, State of New Jersey (limited to the following Counties: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, Warren) and Bermuda Islands. On the day of the appointment, it is necessary to appear in person with the following documentation:

  • application form for applicants over 18 years of age printed and duly filled out in its entirety (Application Form);
  • 2 passport photos (recent, identical, standard passport size, white background, up close, neutral expression, no glasses). Only for applicants over 12 years of age photos may be taken directly at the Consulate;
  • previous Italian passport, unless it is a first passport or in the event of loss/theft. In that case, another valid identification document must be presented
  • applicants holding only Italian citizenship must present a copy of the United States Permanent Resident Card (green card) or entry visa (for Bermuda residents, copy of Bermuda Work Permit Card, Permanent Resident Certificate, Bermuda Status Certificate or Spouse of Bermudian Letter);
  • applicants holding dual citizenship (Italian and U.S./Bermudian), copy of U.S./Bermudian passport and naturalization certificate (in case U.S./Bermudian citizenship was acquired after birth);
  • a pre-paid self-addressed “Priority Mail” envelope with “tracking number” (to be purchased exclusively from US Post Office), for the shipment of the new passport. The Consulate cannot be held responsible for the non-arrival or delayed arrival of the passport due to postal services;
  • the passport may also be picked up at the Consulate by the holder himself/herself or by a third party delegated in writing to pick it up. The date of the pick-up is agreed upon on the day of the appointment. If this option is chosen, the envelope is not required;
  • money order payable to Consulate General of Italy in New York. The cost of the passport for the current quarter is $121.90. For the updated cost of all consular services, see CONSULAR RATES. No credit/debit cards or personal checks are accepted. Money orders are issued by post offices, banks, some large pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens

Applications for passport issuance may also be submitted by non-residents of this consular jurisdiction only in the case of a proven emergency during a temporary presence in this consular jurisdiction. In this case, the issuance of the passport is subject to authorization by the pertinent Police Headquarters or Consular Office based on the applicant’s place of residence. This may prolong the time of the issuance
