If the Italian citizen finds himself in an emergency situation (e.g. if you are an Italian tourist in transit who needs to leave the country within a very short period of time and your passport has been lost or stolen), the Consulate General can issue an ETD (Emergency Travel Document) which is valid only for the return trip to Italy or the country of legal residence (verified by AIRE registration). The ETD cannot be issued earlier than 5 days before the date of departure.
In order to be issued the document, you must go to the Consulate from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 12 am with the following documentation:
- report of passport loss or theft filed with the competent Police Authority;
- 2 recent photos (measures 3.5 x 4.0 cm, frontal, central face with white background, neutral expression);
- another identity document such as an ID card or driver’s license (even in photocopy) or a photocopy of the stolen passport. In the absence of these documents, the office will have to make the appropriate identity checks before issuing the ETD;
- travel document (a copy of your flight reservation and itinerary).
The document is subject to the payment of a $2.00 fee.
