Arrests and detentions

In the event that an Italian citizen is arrested in a foreign country, the Consulate can:

• visit the detainee;
• suggest a lawyer;
• contact family members in Italy;
• provide the detainee, when necessary and authorized by local regulations, with medical care, food, books and newspapers;
• transfer the detainee to Italy, if he/she is detained in a country that signed the Strasbourg Convention on the transfer of detainees or ad hoc bilateral agreements;
• intervene, in certain cases, to support requests for grace on humanitarian grounds.

The Consulate can not:

• intervene in trial on behalf of a citizen;
• pay the legal fees of the detainee.
