Min. Plen. Fabrizio Di Michele, Consul General of Italy in New York
Fabrizio Di Michele is an Italian diplomat with 30 years of experience in the field of international relations.
Born in Palermo on May 16, 1969, he graduated in Political Sciences (International Relations) at the University of Florence in 1992, and joined the Italian Foreign Service in 1995.
He started his career as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Director General for Social Affairs and Migration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was then called in the Schengen Task Force of the Ministry, following the negotiations with North African and Balkan countries.
Between 1997 and 2000 he was posted to the Italian Embassy in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) as Deputy Head of Mission. He acted for a long time as Chargé d’Affaires, including during the war and, when the National Dialogue was launched under the auspices of the Community of St. Egidio, he was closely involved and responsible for the relations with the opposition and former rebels.
Between 2000 and 2004 he was head of the political section of the Italian Embassy in Beijing. In 2003 he also became Chief of Staff of the Ambassador. In the same year, after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Italy and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, he was also accredited to Pyongyang.
From to 2004 to 2007 he was a member of the Foreign Minister’s Cabinet in Rome, preparing the political and economic briefings and assisting the Minister in meetings and missions abroad.
Between June 2007 and October 2011, he served in the Italian Permanent Representation to the European Union, filling up different positions. He began as Chief of staff of the Italian Permanent Representative and Italian delegate to the Western Balkans working group. In 2008 he also covered the Asia working group (notably, the trade negotiations between the EU and several Asian countries). In 2009 he was appointed Deputy Representative at the Political Security Committee of the EU and Coordinator for the Middle East, Mediterranean and Persian Gulf, becoming also the Italian delegate to the Middle East (Maghreb-Mashreq) working group, where the EU policy vis-à-vis the Middle East is negotiated by all Member States.
In 2011 he was selected as Chair of the Middle East Working Group (Maghreb-Mashrek) of the European Union External Action Service in Brussels, where he worked until 2015, temporarily quitting the Italian MFA.
Following his return to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome, from 2015 to 2018 he served as the Italian Envoy for Syria and the International Coalition against ISIL, coordinating at diplomatic level the Italian civilian and military support to the Coalition and following, in parallel, the UN-led negotiations between the Syrian government and different rebel groups.
From 2018 to 2021 he was appointed as Head of the Directorate for the Russian Federation, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, handling the regional questions and the bilateral relations (in particular political and economic) with each country of the region.
Since April 2, 2021, he is the Consul General of Italy in New York, responsible for the consular services and the promotion of the Italian economic, cultural, scientific, technological activities and interests in the Tristate.
Fabrizio Di Michele is married with 3 children.
