Regaining Italian citizenship

If you have lost your Italian citizenship as a result of becoming a citizen of another country (before August 16th 1992) you may now regain it in two different modalities:

  1. By signing a declaration of regain and having settled or settling, within a year from the declaration, your residency in Italy;
  2. After one year of residency in Italy, unless they renounced.

If you have gained foreign citizenship after the August 16th 1992 you will preserve both the citizenships. Individuals registered with this Consulate General may send a copy of certificate of acquisition of foreign citizenship (e.g. US Certificate of Naturalization/Citizenship) in order to upload their status.


How to proceed and necessary documentation

You can book an appointment with the Consulate General's Citizenship Office by writing an email to

Requested documentation:
- Certificate verifying current residency
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificate and eventual divorce decree (if happened in the U.S. , see Vital Records section)
- copy of Italian passport (if available);
- proof of acquisition of foreign citizenship (e.g. US Certificate of Naturalization/Citizenship) – in original and one copy
- U.S. passport or valid photo ID in original plus one copy ;
- the notification form, duly filled in and signed
- Receipt of payment of € 250

The day of the appointment the applicant will submit the above mentioned documents to the office and sign a declaration stating his willingness to move his/her residency to Italy. The applicant must move his/her residency to Italy in the municipality (Comune) of last residence, within one year from the declaration.

Upon his/her arrival in Italy, the applicant will:

  • sign a form (Dichiarazione di presenza) allowing him/her to be registered as a resident at the City Hall (Comune). The Forms are available at the Port of Entry or/and at the local Prefettura;
  • report to the City Hall (Comune) and obtain the “Iscrizione anagrafica”, in order to regain Italian citizenship.

No visa is necessary if the procedure to regain Italian residency takes less than 90 days from the applicant's arrival.
