{"id":577,"date":"2023-05-17T12:24:50","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T16:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consnewyork.esteri.it\/?page_id=577"},"modified":"2026-04-02T10:44:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T14:44:11","slug":"how-do-i-apply-for-a-passport","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consnewyork.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/passaporti-e-carte-didentita\/how-do-i-apply-for-a-passport\/","title":{"rendered":"How do I apply for a passport?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The procedure for issuing the first Italian passport or to renew the previous one, is the same.<\/p>\n<p>Passports cannot be renewed: application for new passport must be processed<\/p>\n<p>For the issuance of passports, <strong>it is always necessary to book an appointment on<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\">Prenot@mi<\/a>, which <strong>must be confirmed by the user directly on the portal ten days<\/strong> <strong>before<\/strong> the scheduled date and no later than four days before the scheduled date<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a courtesy <strong>national over the age of 75<\/strong> can also book the appointment by e-mail, writing to <a href=\"mailto:newyork.passaporti@esteri.it\">newyork.passaporti@esteri.it<\/a> or calling +1 (646) 897-0653 on Wednesdays from 2 to 3 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that passport <strong>applications<\/strong> <strong>sent by mail<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>will not be processed<\/strong>\u00a0and will be mailed back to the sender. Passports applications\u00a0<strong>can only be processed in person at the Consulate<\/strong>, provided that applicant has a scheduled appointment.<\/p>\n<p>For passport issuance, it is necessary to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be an <strong>Italian<\/strong> citizen<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be registered in the AIRE<\/strong> with updated residential address in this consular district, which consists of: State of New York, State of Connecticut, State of New Jersey (limited to the following Counties: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, Warren) and Bermuda Islands. To learn how to submit your AIRE registration or update your address,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consnewyork.esteri.it\/consolato_newyork\/i_servizi\/per-i-cittadini\/anagrafe\/\">click here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the day of the appointment, it is necessary to appear in person with the following documentation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>application form<\/strong> for applicants over 18 years of age printed and duly filled out in its entirety (<a href=\"https:\/\/consnewyork.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/DOMANDA-RILASCIO-PASSAPORTO.pdf\">Application Form<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 passport photos<\/strong> (recent, identical, standard passport size, white background, up close, neutral expression, no glasses). Only for applicants over 12 years of age photos may be taken directly at the Consulate;<\/li>\n<li><strong>previous Italian passport<\/strong>, unless it is a first passport or in the event of loss\/theft. In that case, another valid identification document must be presented<\/li>\n<li><strong>applicants holding only Italian citizenship must present a copy of the United States Permanent Resident Card (green card) or entry visa<\/strong> (for Bermuda residents, copy of Bermuda Work Permit Card, Permanent Resident Certificate, Bermuda Status Certificate or Spouse of Bermudian Letter);<\/li>\n<li><strong>applicants holding dual citizenship<\/strong> (Italian and U.S.\/Bermudian), <strong>copy of U.S.\/Bermudian passport and naturalization certificate<\/strong> (in case U.S.\/Bermudian citizenship was acquired after birth);<\/li>\n<li><strong>a pre-paid self-addressed \u201cPriority Mail\u201d envelope with \u201ctracking number\u201d<\/strong> (to be purchased exclusively from US Post Office), for the shipment of the new passport. The Consulate cannot be held responsible for the non-arrival or delayed arrival of the passport due to postal services;<\/li>\n<li><strong>the passport may also be picked up at the Consulate<\/strong> by the holder himself\/herself or by a third party delegated in writing to pick it up. The date of the pick-up is agreed upon on the day of the appointment. If this option is chosen, the envelope is not required;<\/li>\n<li><strong>money order<\/strong> payable to Consulate General of Italy in New York.\u00a0For the updated cost of all consular services, see <a href=\"https:\/\/consnewyork.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/fees\/\">CONSULAR RATES<\/a>. <strong>No credit\/debit cards or personal checks are accepted<\/strong>. Money orders are issued by post offices, banks and some large pharmacies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Applications for passport issuance may also be submitted by non-residents of this consular jurisdiction <strong>only in the case of a proven emergency during a temporary presence in this consular jurisdiction<\/strong>. In this case, the issuance of the passport is subject to authorization by the pertinent Police Headquarters or Consular Office based on the applicant&#8217;s place of residence.
