Italian driver’s license: validity confirmation

Italian driver’s license: validity confirmation

Circular n. 107, 14 October 1997, of the Ministry of Transportation provides for the renewal by the Italian consular authorities of the driver’s license of Italian citizens residing abroad who are regularly registered in the consular registry (AIRE).

In order to obtain the validity confirmation for the Italian driver’s license, you need to:

  • make an appointment with one of the qualified physicians listed here for a medical check-up (at your expense), to obtain the required certificate.
  • mail to the consulate:
    • your driver’s license (N.B.: may be expired for up to five years);
    • the medical certificate, and
    • a money order for the total of the required fees, together with
    • a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

We suggest that you always use a trackable mailing service, such as USPS Priority; FedEx; UPS, etc.

 Italian driver’s license holders must remember that when they move back to Italy and are no longer registered in AIRE, they must apply for the regular renewal procedure (as described in Par. 8 of art. 126 of the Codice della strada), even if the validity confirmation document received from the Consulate has not expired yet
